Can I start taking prenatal vitamins 3 months prior to TTC?

Posted by Admin | Spirulina Powder | Thursday 18 March 2010 7:33 am

My hubby and I will start trying for a baby in October…should I start taking prenatal vitamins now? Thanks.

Yes you should :-)

I started taking a prenatal vitamin as soon as I stopped birth control, and was on them for a full 3 years before I found out I was pregnant.

I’m 13 weeks now and still on a prenatal (these ones the doctor prescribed though, the others were just the Target brand), and we just had our 12 week ultrasound and they said the baby looks great.

It’s really going to help you and the baby a lot by getting the prenatal in your system ahead of being pregnant. It actually wouldn’t be a bad idea for your hubby to take a daily multivitamin too if he isn’t.

You should also take this time to make sure your diet is as healthy as possible, start exercising regularly if you don’t, cut out alcohol and caffeine and drink lots of water.

Good for you hun! I wish you all the luck in the world :-)

Can I put zinc pill powder directly on a pimple?

Posted by Admin | Spirulina Powder | Thursday 18 March 2010 7:33 am

I know that zinc pills and zinc cream can improve acne. I have been taking 1 zinc supplement (50mg) for the last 3 weeks. Does anyone have an opinion of whether or not I can put crushed zinc pill powder directly on a pimple. I have a miny breakout that I would like to clear asap and I though maybe zinc would help.

Thanks,

I would not do it. Zinc pill powder is not formulated to be used directly on a pimple. Remember, zinc is also a metal and how do you know what effect it will have when you put it in contact directly with your blood capillaries?

There used to be a product for athlete’s foot called "Ting" which contained zinc oxide. Always an experimentor, I did use that for the occasional pimple. It burned, but the pimple cleared up. Pimple medications have come a long way in 25 years. The products on the market today are very good. Stick with the tried-and-true products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

Are Nestles Smarties suitable for vegetarians?

Posted by Admin | Spirulina Powder | Thursday 18 March 2010 7:33 am

Ingrediants: Sugar, Whey Powder, Butterfat, Skimmed milk powder, Cocoa butter, Wheat starch, Emulsifiers (Soya lecithin, Polyglycerol polyricinoleate) Colours (Titanium dioxide, Mixed carotenes, Carminic acid, Vegetable carbon, Riboflavin, Copper complexed of chlorophylins) Spirulina concentrate, Orange extract, Modified starch, glazing agents (Carnauba wax, beeswax), Beetroot juice concentrate

Nope Nestle Smarties are not veggie because they contain cochineal (caminic acid – or E120) and the whey is made with rennet of animal origin. Cochineal is made from crushed beetles.

If you want an alternative Sainsburys and Morrisons both do their own brand chocolate beans which are suitable for veggies, or Allerycare make ones called Whizzers which are suitable for vegans (available in Morrisons, Holland and Barrett and most health-food shops).

http://www.extend-yourlife.com/p22-Zinc-60-Capsules.html
Zinc has been considered an essential element since the 15th century. It activates more than 100 different enzymes in the body, including visual and digestive enzymes. Studies show that zinc accounts for one-sixth of the brain. It is core to advanced thinking, important in learning language and storing information. Zinc deficiency may lead to memory loss, movement impediment and muddled thinking. It may cause early onset of dementia.

The amount of zinc added in Tiens Zinc supplement is in line with an individuals recommended daily nutritional needs. Each capsule contains 0.8-1.2mg zinc.

Zinc can be derived from food, vegetable and meat, but the absorption rate depends on the persons stomach acid concentration and other factors that may make absorption and utilisation difficult. This supplement is composed of lactic Zinc, which has a high rate of absorption, but not the pernicious effects of phytate and phytic acid. It is the ideal supplement and, we can confidently say, the best zinc for every adult. It also contains glucose and egg protein powder.

Powders and Pills Part 3

Posted by Admin | Spirulina Powder | Tuesday 16 March 2010 4:16 pm

The Official AZAZEL workout drink is finally here! This is not a “Protein Drink” per say but rather a natural alternative to commercial over the counter supplements that simply DO NOT WORK. This drink does not contain any TOXIC SUBSTANCES which literally fill over the counter supplement containers and will not put any undue stress on ones Kidneys or Liver.

The contents of the drink are as follows:

1 Cup Apple Juice from concentrate
1 Raw Egg
1 LEVEL Teaspoon Spirulina Powder
4 LEVEL Teaspoons Hemp Protein Powder
1 Packet of Stevia Extract

Nutritional information is as follows

Calories: 329
Fats: 7g
Carbohydrates: 30g
Carbohydrates from Sugar: 27g
Protein: 20g

Cost per serving: $1.90

Drink once per day on training days and optionally drink one serving on none training days. ALWAYS eat properly and drink plenty of water.

I don’t claim to be a nutritional expert but I believe I know enough to form an informed opinion. For all of those caught up in the whole “protein trap” (people brainwashed by the supplement industry into believing that one needs super high levels of protein to attain their goals) consider that this drink has the same level of protein as BSN’s Syntha-6 per serving for less than HALF the cost. Over the counter supplements are NOT EVALUATED FOR EFFECTIVENESS in any way shape or form by independent testing and they DO NOT WORK! The supplement industry RIPS OFF CONSUMERS to the tune of 23 BILLION dollars a year in the United States alone yet Obesity still runs rampant like a plague over the land. Do your own research and draw your own conclusions.

When are you supposed to start pre-natal vitamins?

Posted by Admin | Spirulina Powder | Tuesday 16 March 2010 9:25 am

I went to my doctor to tell her that my husband and I would like to have a baby. She wanted to do a blood test before I went off the pill to make sure all my vaccines were up to date. I found out that my test came back fine but now I can’t remember if I am supposed to start my pre-natal vitamins now or once I’m already pregnant. I’m a little embarrassed to phone her back and ask since I just spoke to her a couple days ago.

Vitamins are found in nearly all foods, so as long as you are eating a reasonably healthy and balanced diet it is unlikely that you or your baby will suffer vitamin deficiency.

The need for folic acid doubles while you’re pregnant. Since your body does not store this vitamin, and as the kidneys excrete much more of this vitamin during pregnancy, you need a daily source of 400-800 micrograms. Deficiency in folic acid has been linked to congenital malformations of the baby’s central nervous system, primarily spinabifida. Recent studies showed that pregnant women who took between 100 and 4,000 micrograms of folic acid during the first 6 to 12 weeks of pregnancy had a much lower risk of delivering babies with spinal column defects. Since there is no way to tell if you are one of these women, all women should take folic acid supplements, as early in pregnancy as possible since these malformations occur in the first few weeks. Folic acid is plentiful in common foods, such as raw, leafy vegetables, legumes, kidneys, nuts, liver, dark yellow fruits and vegetables, dried beans and peas, and broccoli.

Don’t megadose on vitamins while pregnant unless your doctor orders. Excesses of vitamin A, D, and E have been linked to birth defects or health problems in the mother. Even though the body usually protects against overdosing of most nutrients (especially water-soluble vitamins), excess vitamins A, D, and E are not automatically eliminated from the body because they are fat-soluble and therefore stored in body fat. Large doses of vitamins A, C, and B-complex used to be considered harmless because these vitamins are water-soluble and therefore the excess is easily excreted through the urine. Yet newborns of mothers who take megadoses of vitamin C can enter the world dependent on these high doses and actually develop signs of vitamin deficiency after birth. Some infants of mothers who took large doses of vitamin B6 during pregnancy may be more likely to develop seizures. The bottom line on this new research is that it’s safest to stick with the dosage of vitamins recommended by your healthcare provider, no more, no less.

if i take daily zinc supplements to balance hormones and help clear my acne, will it strengthen my liver, too?

Posted by Admin | Spirulina Powder | Tuesday 16 March 2010 9:25 am

Ive read a lot of good things about zinc clearing up acne so ive decided to try it, but ive also found out that another important factor that causes acne is your liver. zinc is supposed to help the hormone half, and liver strength is supposed to clear excess blood toxins that cause the other half. so can zinc help my liver strengthen? what can? can green tea antioxidant supplements help?

i can’t answer any of those questions but you would be well advised to supplement your zinc with copper, which is used up in digesting zinc -otherwise, you will deplete your stores of copper, which can actually cause more (and sometimes the same) problems.

a natural, good source of both zinc and copper is cashews. i know my mood lifts dramatically the day after i eat a lot of these nuts… actually, maybe i shouldn’t be telling you this; those nuts are expensive enough as it is! :D
