Why is Zinc Supplement Causing Vomiting?

Posted by Admin | Spirulina Powder | Thursday 18 February 2010 8:19 am

I’ve been taking a zinc supplement every day for healthy hair (I’m on acccutane which can cause hair thinning), but it makes me vomit 10 minutes after ingestion every time. I’ve had the same problem with multi-vitamins. I’m a pretty small female (a little over 100 lbs) but I’ve tried teen & kid vitamins with the same result. Anyone know why?
I was taking (1) Finest Natural tablet (from Walgreens) a day, which are 50mg. Why would they sell a tablet so far above the recommended dose?

40 mg is actually a more conservative "maximum dose" for Zinc… it’s commonly as high as 50 mg as a daily recommendation (for those that need that high of a dose), but some people would have to build up a tolerance to that or be deficient enough that they need that. The RDA is 15 mg daily, but some people just need more than the RDA (which is the basic daily minimum to sustain basic health).

With that being said, there are two thoughts that I have as "most likely options". Since you are on Accutane, I looked it up and two of the side effects are listed as "nausea and vomiting" according to http://www.drugs.com/accutane.html
Zinc is known to upset the stomach, especially when taken without food, so I think the two of those together is just too much for your stomach and you lose it. Another less likely possibility is that you might be allergic to Zinc, but you would get sick (or at least nauseous) whenever you take any amount of Zinc… I’m sure you would have noticed that if that’s the case. It’s rare, but I’m one of the lucky few who is allergic to Zinc, so I know it’s possible.

I would recommend trying the Zinc (with food) at a separate time of day as the Accutane… as far apart as possible (like one in the morning, the other in the evening). If that doesn’t help, then just avoid the Zinc for now. Good luck and I hope I helped!

If i am taking Spirulina powder, does that mean i do not have to eat so many vegetables?

Posted by Admin | Spirulina Powder | Thursday 18 February 2010 8:19 am

I feel like i dont have time to eat 5veg a day….but i take spirulina everyday.

Spirulina is an algae and is high in a lot of vitamins and a very good source of protein. You should not use it as a replacement, but, rather an addition to your meals.
If you find it difficult to get in 5 portions of fruit and veg a day, try making smoothies, you can add spirulina to these, if you add greens to fruit in a good ratio you won’t even taste them. Add banana, apple, spinach/kale, celery or cucumber and apple or grape juice and carrots and strawberries and blend with spirulina. Yum.

Take Action Now on GMO Alfalfa! Deadline closing….

Posted by Admin | Spirulina Powder | Wednesday 17 February 2010 6:13 pm

Tell the USDA:
http://action.foodandwaterwatch.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=2027

The USDA is getting closer to approving Monsanto’s genetically engineered alfalfa. One of the biggest impacts of allowing the use of GE alfalfa is contamination of other crops, including organic alfalfa, which is used by most organic dairies. The USDA actually acknowledges the problem of contamination, but claims consumers and others in the organic movement may not care about the contamination. This is absurd, considering one of the main reasons many people seek out organic food is to avoid genetically engineered crops.

We need to let the USDA know that consumers don’t want genetically engineered foods, and don’t want organic foods to be contaminated. Tell the USDA to reject the approval for Monsanto’s GE alfalfa.

Is a zinc supplement safe for a 17 year old male, assuming the dose is about 50 mg a day? Thanks!?

Posted by Admin | Spirulina Powder | Tuesday 16 February 2010 5:05 am

I wouldn’t suggest it – here is why….

Zinc is used in the body in over 300 different reactions. And it needs its "buddies" to perform those reactions…buddies such as vitamin C, Copper, etc…

So your best bet would be to take a multivitamin

Also…
There are some people who want to take Zinc because it helps to clear up acne, increase testosterone, etc…I’m not sure if it does that, but I do know that after taking large doses (and anything above 20mgs I would consider a large dose) suppresses (slows down) the immune system after a few weeks

How to prepare powdered substance into solid pellets so that it will not doesn’t melt and contaminate water.

Posted by Admin | Spirulina Powder | Tuesday 16 February 2010 5:05 am

Hi there, I have some Spirulina Powder(Pet Fish Enhancer) and I would like to ask if anyone knows how I can make them into solid pellets so that they won’t melt into my fish tank. Thank you so much!

www.fishnfriends.com/spiruzina.html

I make homemade food for my goldfish, and the best way is to use unflavored gelatin. Just boil water, add the powder and then add the gelatin. Let it cool and set, cut it up into small bits, and your fish will love it! You can even freeze it in your freezer so it will stay good for a long time.

The Benefits Of Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Vitamin D

Posted by Admin | Spirulina Powder | Sunday 14 February 2010 3:28 pm

This video describes some benefits of alpha-lipoic acid and Vitamin D, the former with regards to Lyme disease and the latter in more general terms. If you believe heavy metals are a problem with you, I would not recommend doses of above 2-300 mg of alpha-lipoic acid, as it is a very powerful heavy metal chelator. (In the video I mention 600 mg as the max dose, but I have since rescinded my position on this. To be on the safe side, I would stay at a lower dose, unless you are also taking a strong heavy metal binder such as DMSA, and especially if metals are a significant problem for you. Note: This video was actually recorded four weeks ago. I am just now getting a chance to post it! See also my written blog post (from early January) on these nutrients: www.lymebytes.blogspot.com
